Trademark Registration in Egypt

Egypt's Egyptian Patent Office (EGPO) handles trademark registrations under Law No. 82 of 2002. Egypt is the largest market in North Africa and a significant trade partner for India, particularly in pharmaceuticals, textiles, automotive components, and information technology. Egypt is a member of the Madrid Protocol, offering Indian brand owners the option of filing through the international route. The Egyptian trademark system follows a first-to-file approach, and registration provides 10 years of protection renewable indefinitely. The examination process typically takes 6 to 12 months. One important requirement: trademark applications in Egypt must be filed through a local registered agent or attorney, and a notarised and legalised Power of Attorney is mandatory.

Any individual, partnership firm, LLP, private limited company, or corporate entity—whether domestic or foreign—is eligible to apply for trademark registration in Egypt. For foreign applicants (including Indian businesses), the application must be submitted through a registered local agent or attorney, or designated internationally under the Madrid Protocol. A pre-existing trademark in India is not mandatory for a direct national application, but is required if you are utilizing the Madrid Protocol route. The mark must be distinctive, non-descriptive, and not conflict with any pre-existing registered trademarks or pending applications in Egypt.
